We use the ARC/INFO Geographic Information System (GIS) to produce regional and local
maps. With GIS, our staff has made maps and tables for Centralina's Regional Atlas, river
studies, COG member governments, and others. Topics mapped include study areas, housing
types/age, land use, utilities, recreation sites, and building permits. The system is used
to present demographic data including age, income, employment, population density,
household characteristics, and poverty. Locally, we have used GIS to produce base maps,
annexation studies, and economic development projects. Our GIS staff
includes two certified Geographic Information System Professionals (GISP). This department also houses Centralina's Data Center, an affiliate of the NC State Data Center. The Data Center provides detailed statistical information on a variety of categories including: population, employment, transportation, economic indicators and education. Our sources include: the US Bureau of the Census, Employment Security Commission (for both North and South Carolina), Department of Public Instruction, Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (Home Mortgage Disclosure Act), and many others. The GIS mapping capability of our Information Technology Department is combined with our Data Center's statistical data to generate both customized and standardized reports that highlight trends and activities within select geographic regions. In this capacity, the Information Technology Department functions as the source for customized data and mapping projects for both private and public sector entities.
